Dolce Suono: Music of Spirit, Longing, and Passion

Five friends on a Sunday afternoon

"The two pieces that featured mezzo Misoon Ghim were a good example of the diversity and ability on display. Ghim sang the opening aria by Handel in a true Baroque style, with all the ornaments, such as long trills, that make Baroque vocal music exciting and emotionally effective. Then, a few minutes later, she sang three of Manuel Valls’s 20th-century versions of Spanish Sephardic songs, two with a soaring medieval troubadour style, and the finale with a lively, hip-swinging rhythm."

Possessed of a powerful voice and striking stage presence, Misoon Ghim has appeared on the stages of the New York City Opera and the Opera Company of Philadelphia as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, and with Opera Delaware as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Most recently she appeared with the Daegu International Opera Festival as Amneris in Aida. The New York Times’ Bernard Holland praised Ghim's New York City Opera performance as “first rate," and Clive Barnes raved of her “dramatic sensitivity" in the role of Suzuki.

Distinguished American Soprano Benita Valente described Ms. Ghim’s voice as “possessing a luscious timbre, delivered in such a way that is, at once, astonishing, artful and agile. Ms. Ghim's dramatic flair ranges from the quintessential willfulness of Rosina at one extreme to the dignified heroism of Mother Marie at the other. Her masterful interpretations encompass repertoire from early music to modern, from Ms. Ghim's deeply moving Bach's Matthew's Passion to her glowingly transcendent Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden gesellen.

Ms.Ghim has graced the concert stage with some of the world’s leading conductors, including Maestri Wolfgang Sawallisch, Christoph Eschenbach and Patrick Summers. Her soloist performances with orchestra have included Brahms’ Alto Rhapsodie, Mendelssohn’s Elijah as well as Mahler's Rückert Lieder and Symphony no. 2.

After her recent signing with the international recording company, Universal Music Group Korea, Ms. Ghim’s much anticipated all-Baroque debut album will be released in South Korea in the Fall of 2012. In conjunction with her album's release Ms. Ghim will be performing as guest soloist with the Korean Chamber Orchestra under the directorship of Maestro Min Kim at the Seoul Arts Center on October 10, 2012.

Ms. Ghim was educated at The Juilliard School and Curtis Institute of Music, was the recipient of two Metropolitan Opera Education Fund awards and emerged quickly from the San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program and her tour as Cherubino with Western Opera Theater into her opera and concert stage career. She resides in Philadelphia with her husband and two children.
